Confidential reporting and analysis of near-miss events
for a safer maritime transportation system

The Safe Maritime Transportation System (SafeMTS) empowers industry to voluntarily and confidentially share information about near-miss events, which include narrowly avoided collisions or other accidents that could have occurred but did not. A partnership among the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration and Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and industry, SafeMTS helps all participants identify early warnings of safety problems and develop strategies to avoid more serious incidents.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics releases SafeMTS Report: Applying Large Language Models to Maritime Near-Miss Safety Data Analysis - Early Release

The SafeMTS team recently released a report presenting findings from a data analysis pilot project exploring how advanced data science methods can help streamline processing and analysis of maritime near-miss safety data for U.S. flagged vessels.

The report includes includes a summary of the methodology, evaluation, and results of the analysis pilot, as well as potential next steps informed by this effort for improving data quality, accelerating timely insights, and fostering ongoing industry engagement. These next steps include continued development of advanced analytical capabilities and enhanced collaboration with maritime industry stakeholders to shape further research.
